Szekler Cup 2024: Sapientia U23 Triumphs in a Celebration of University Hockey!

The 4th edition of the EUHL Szekler Cup, held under the auspices of the European University Hockey League, once again proved that university hockey on the international stage is reaching new heights. From March 19th to 21st, the Felcsík Ice Rink hosted four ambitious teams that delivered dramatic moments, raw emotions, and top-tier athletic performances.

Intense Battles from the First Puck Drop

The „round-robin“ tournament format guaranteed a maximum dose of action for UNI Győr ETO HC, DEAC, Opole United, and Sapientia U23. The fierce competition was evident as several games had to be decided in overtime.

Day 1: The opening duels brought instant drama – DEAC defeated Győr 3-2 in OT, and Opole took down Sapientia with a similar 4-3 OT victory.
Day 2: Opole United confirmed their favorite status with a dominant 5-1 win over DEAC. However, Sapientia clawed back into the title race with a crucial 4-3 victory over Győr.

The Decisive Finale and Final Standings

The final day was a showcase of offensive hockey. Following a high-scoring shootout between Opole and Győr (8-6), it was time for the grand finale. The clash between Sapientia U23 and DEAC culminated in overtime, where the home team netted a „golden goal“ for a 3-2 victory, securing the championship title!
