The EUHL has a new champion. The Sekeráš Trophy is in the hands of students – hockey players from Banská Bystrica
The final series of the European University Hockey League (EUHL) is played as a best-of-three one. Four games were enough for team of Banská Bystrica to lift the winner’s trophy above their heads.
In the finals, the aforementioned UMB Hockey Team Banská Bystrica met the winner of the regular season, the Gladiators Trenčín. The opening matchup belonged to the Gladiators, who managed to win by 5:4 on their home ice. Subsequently, however, they came up short – in the second game they lost to UMB by 2:3 after the overtime, then the series moved to central Slovakia.
Lukáš Opáth’s men showed their strength – they won the championship match point with a 6:1 triumph. The last step, which, as they say, is the most difficult, took the form of a 4-3 win. Matúš Kamzík, a longtime pillar of the UMB Hockey Team, took care of the game-winning goal in the 54th minute.
Both Gladiators Trenčín and UMB Hockey Team Banská Bystrica had so far won two championship titles in the EUHL. With this year’s victory, the team from Banská Bystrica tipped the scales in its favor and is currently the most successful Slovak participant in the EUHL. In addition to Slovak university teams, there are also teams from Poland, Hungary and Romania in the EUHL international competition.
